EXHIBITED: London, The Leicester Galleries, Paintings by Gilbert Spencer, May 1943, no.14
An artist of the English Landscape traditiion, Gilbert Spencer was attracted to the coloquial charm of the farming community, as Marina Vaizey's introduction to the 1974 retrospective of his work states, "There is within his work ... a singular and discernable passion for the well-ordered, well-cultivated English village and English landscape." His interest in the country garden is also visible in his From the Garden, Twyford, Dorset, (Exh. February 1939), painted during his time visiting Dorset with his brother Stanley.
