Footnotes

  • EXHIBITED:
Reading, Reading Museum and Art Gallery, The Retrospective Exhibition of the work of Gilbert Spencer, 10 June - 15 July 1964

In 1932 Gilbert was appointed as a Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art, a post that he was to hold until 1948. However with the onset of the Second World War, the school relocated to rural Ambelside, taking Spencer with it. In the early 1940s Gilbert began a series of drawings of the Home Guard for a proposed publication, which were later to be dismissed by the publishers, and it is probable that the current work relates closely to this commission.
