Footnotes

  • EXHIBITED:
Reading, Reading Museum and Art Gallery, The Retrospective Exhibition of the work of Gilbert Spencer, 10 June - 15 July, 1964 (Portrait of artist's father)

Of all the works in the collection, it was possibly these delicate pencil sketches that carried the greatest importance to Percy and his daughter Pamela. Gilbert had used his father as the basis for his Christ-figure in his early painting The Crucifixion (1915), and Gilbert later sketched both his brother and newly appointed sister-in-law whilst the pair honeymooned in Wangford, Suffolk. Pamela was bridesmaid at Gilbert's wedding in 1930 to Ursula Bradshaw, and it is probable that the current sketch was made around this date.
