  As Sir John Rothenstein wrote in his appreciation of the artist's work in 1974 "Gilbert is at his happiest painting landscape for its own sake", and the series of unpopulated landscapes at Stourpaine and elsewhere in the county reflect the artist's masterly use of paint in the works, most probably executed en plein air in the 1920s and early 1930s.
