Towards Bere Nap - Dorset Study oil on board 36.5 x 41.5cm (14 3/8 x 16 5/16in).
EXHIBITED: Reading, Reading Museum and Art Gallery, The Retrospective Exhibition of the work of Gilbert Spencer, 10 June - 15 July 1964
Gilbert spent the summer of 1920 visiting Stourpaine in Dorset with his brother Stanley and Henry Lamb, a prolific collector of Stanley's work. He was later to re-visit the South West with his brother Percy and his family in the 1930s, where he made several sketches of the lush, unspoilt landscape. These scenes of the Dorset landscape, the current view depicting a landscape near Twyford, were to first appear in his first solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery, London, which served to establish Gilbert's reputation as an artist of great aptitude in capturing the appeal of the truly British landscape.
