Le Bloc, Creuse (After Monet) bears signature and dated 'Claude Monet 89' (lower left), oil on canvas 74.5 x 95.5cm (29 5/16 x 37 5/8in).
This painting was exhibited in 1957 at The Royal Academy as part of an exhibition of the works of Sir Gerald Kelly. The catalogue entry read:-
Copy of 'The Roc' (Le Bloc, Creuse) Copy of the landscape by Claude Monet (now in the collection of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother), made in September 1938 Lent by the artist
Monet's version was painted in 1889 and was acquired by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother from Galerie Wildenstein on 20th September 1945 for £1,800. Sir Gerald Kelly saw the Moent at Wildensteins circa 1939 and asked permission from the gallery to make a copy of it (as mentioned in a letter from Gerald Kelly to Kenneth Clark).
