Footnotes

  • The present lot is one of the many comic drawings that Millais drew for the amusement of his friends the Lempriere family. It is in the style of illustrations to Dickens novels by Phiz. The family lived in Ewell, south of London, but were from Jersey like the artist himself. The man
resting his head on his hand at the table is Captain William Lempriere. In all likelihood the scene refers to some actual experience of the family, in which clearly there was a lot of vomiting, perhaps a choppy crossing to Jersey. The thin young man seen from the back in the upper left corner is the young Millais.

We are grateful to Bill Waters for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
