2009 Ironside 100ci Chopper
This stunning motorcycle has been donated to the Richard Burns Foundation by the specialist manufacturers in order to raise funds for the charity. Born in Reading, England, the late Richard Burns (1971-2005) enjoyed an eight-year career in international rallying at the highest level, driving for Mitsubishi, Subaru and Peugeot. In 2001 he became World Rally Champion driving for Subaru, while his stints with Mitsubishi and Peugeot helped them to the Manufacturers' titles in 1998 and 2002 respectively. In 2003 he was diagnosed with cancer and lost his brave battle against the condition two years later. The Foundation was established to inspire and support people afflicted by serious illness and injury, in the memory of a good man and a brave champion.
Created by Midlands-based specialists, Ironside Choppers, the 'Richard Burns Tribute Bike' has taken two years to complete and was publicly displayed for the first time at this year's Goodwood Revival Meeting, where it helped raise awareness of the charity by drawing huge crowds throughout the event. Over the weekend, many of motorsport's stars of past and present added their autographs to the machine, which is finished in Burns' famous blue and yellow Subaru livery and depicts highlights of his successful rallying career. Among those who have shown their support for the project by signing this unique motorcycle are Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, Rauno Aaltonen, Sebastien Loeb, Petter Solberg, Mikko Hirvonen, Jochen Mass, Jackie Oliver, Bobby Rahal, Danny O'Sullivan, Richard Attwood, Derek Bell, Mick Grant, Leon Haslam and James Haydon. A full list of signatories may be found on Bonhams' web site.
Highlights of the machine's specification include a Harley-Davidson-style air-cooled v-twin engine displacing 100ci (1,639cc); custom twin-downtube soft-tail frame; six-speed gearbox, belt final drive; disc brakes; and Big Growl shotgun exhaust pipes. We understand that an application for MSVA is ongoing.
