Footnotes

  • Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1982, the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo provoked a rash of headlines proclaiming the return of the 'Blower Bentley'. 'In one spectacular leap the men from Crewe have given back the famous marque its true identity and their new Spirit-generation model all the performance it could handle,' declared The Motor.
The Turbo was a high-performance development of the normally aspirated Mulsanne, which had been introduced alongside its Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit sister car in 1980, the former's evocative name recalling Bentley's heroic, Le Mans-winning exploits of the 1920s. In developing their engine to accept a Garrett AiResearch turbo-charger, Rolls-Royce's engineers had to overcome the inevitable drawback of 'turbo lag', but apart from the necessary complication that this involved, needed to make few fundamental changes to the ruggedly-built 6,750cc V8. Despite its not inconsiderable weight, the Turbo would accelerate to 60mph in around eight seconds and 135mph would be showing on the clock before the limiter cut in. Few cars were - or are - better suited to fast long-distance touring.
This almost certainly unique Mulsanne Turbo was despatched new to the Channel Islands and had enjoyed six owners there, covering some 33,000 miles, before coming to the UK mainland in 2003, since when it has covered a further 3,000 miles. That same year the car was sent to coachbuilders Coway Ltd of Bolton for conversion to estate configuration, a process that took 12 months to complete. Coway's conversion involved replacing the original roof with an estate rear body; re-trimming the interior with new leather (headlining included) and new carpets; refurbishing the interior woodwork including the picnic tables; and restoring the engine bay. Other noteworthy features include a sports radiator grille, parking sensors, DVD player, satellite navigation and an awning. Finished in mustard over claret with maroon-piped magnolia interior, the Bentley is described by the lady vendor as in generally excellent condition and offered with current road fund licence, MoT to 28th July 2012 and Swansea V5C document.
