1933 AJS 249cc Model 12 'Big Port'
Frame no. 1135
Engine no. 138383
Following the 1931 takeover of AJS by rivals Matchless, production was relocated from Wolverhampton to the latter's Woolwich factory and AJS's identity as a separate marque steadily eroded from then onwards as the machines became more like their Matchless counterparts. For 1933 the 250cc overhead-valve Model 12 was revised, gaining an inclined cylinder and rear-mounted magneto. In this form the smallest of the 'Big Port' range lasted until the end of the 1934 season when it was superseded by a new Matchless-engined 250, and thus is one of the rarer AJS models of the 1930s. This unregistered example was bought from a speedway enthusiast in September 2010 and since then has been started periodically but not ridden. Offered with VMCC dating certificate and described by the vendor as in generally good condition, the machine will require re-commissioning and the customary safety checks before further use.
