Associated Motor Cycles were late in producing a twin-cylinder model to rival those of Triumph, BSA and Norton. When announced in 1948, the AJS Model 20 and equivalent Matchless G9, while following the established pattern of British parallel twins, were unusual in having an engine with a third, central, crankshaft main bearing. The new 498cc power unit was housed in the sprung frame recently introduced to the heavyweight singles line-up. Progressively developed, the motor underwent capacity increases to 550cc and 593cc, finally arriving at 646cc in the autumn of 1958 with the launch of the AJS Model 31 and Matchless G12. Fitted with a 646cc Model 31 engine dating from 1961, this AJS Model 30 was purchased by the late owner at Bonhams' Stafford Sale in October 2001 (Lot 612) at which time it was described as benefiting from many new parts (including exhaust pipes and seat) and an engine rebuilt earlier that year. The deceased owner subsequently stripped the machine intending to carry out a full restoration but no further work was done. Offered for restoration and sold strictly as viewed, the machine comes with AJS & Matchless Owners Cub dating certificate.
