  • The scene likely depicts events from the British victory at the Battle of Cape St Vincent off the cost of Portugal in 1797, during the The Anglo-Spanish War. The ships are marked with a 'P.G' for HMS Prince George, commanded by Rear-Admiral William Parker and Captain John Irwin, and a 'T' for the Spanish ship Terrible, commanded by Capt. F. Uriarte.
