Footnotes

  • By family repute, this jewel was given to Lady Katherine Manners (d. 1829) by her mother, The Duchess of Rutland (1756-1831), on the occasion of her marriage to Cecil Wald Forester, 1st Baron Forester (1767-1828), in 1800 and thence by descent to the current owner.

In the eighteenth century a lady's dress would be embellished with a 'V'-shaped section between the neck and waist called a 'stomacher'. The stomacher was often used to support jewels which bore the same name. Earlier in the century the fashion had been for a series of graduated brooches, to give the appearance that the stomacher had a lattice of diamonds, and this continued and developed into bow, knot and foliate motifs later in the 1700s. Many inventories of the great houses included jewels such as the one offered here, as they were often one of the most expensive items owned by the house.
