Footnotes

  • During the nineteenth century, the waters near the Italian town of Torre del Greco were discovered as a rich source of coral and Naples quickly became the centre for the increasingly popular coral industry. This suite is by the Neopolitan jeweller, Luigi Casalta, who established his business in 1851 and supplied coral jewels to the Imperial Court of Austria, the Royal Court of Italy, and to H.R.H. Princess Louise of Prussia. By family repute, this suite was displayed at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889.
