A mother-of-pearl inlaid hardwood box
The wide and short rectangular box composed of well-figured wood of auburn hue, the fitted top lid carved with a raised beaded border surrounding a recessed inset central panel (cracked), the elaborate inlay featuring motifs of the 'Eight Auspicious Objects' (ba jixiang) and the Emblems of the Eight Immortals concentrically surrounding a tableau of cranes and pine, with rinceaux of intricately rendered leafy vines and gourds to the upper and lower rims, all supported by slightly raised feet.
