Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
Likely to have been painted in the late 1960s or early 1970s
    Private collection

According to respected Alice Springs historian Richard Kimber, Moketarinja was the only artist of the Aranda watercolour school at Hermannsberg who on occasion turned his hand to representing traditional ceremonial designs rather than landscape (personal correspondence).

In these rare examples he paints designs associated with his Caterpillar Dreaming. It is possible that these paintings may pre-date the works produced by the 'painting men' at Papunya in 1971.
