    The gentleman is wearing a scarlet cross ribbon as one of the followers of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, commander of the Royalist cavalry in the English Civil War. Another version of this portrait was offered at Christie's, London, 18 May 1990, lot 202, which was identified as William Cotton.
