During the immediate post-war period, Cadillac, under the direction of Harley Earl, produced some of the world's most attractive automobiles and pioneered the ultimate direction for American automobile styling over the next decade. The cars surpassed their competition not only visually but technologically as well, introducing a potent OHV V-8 in 1949, which was no doubt a factor in Motor Trend's decision to christen the 1949 Cadillac as their very first "Car of the Year". During this period, the Cadillac brand truly lived up to its slogan "Standard of the World".
Cadillacs were status symbols a Cadillac in the driveway certainly emblematic of the American Dream and while the cars offered luxurious appointments, they could also be driven with some vigor. This was proven by Briggs Cunningham, who to the utter disbelief of the French entered the 1950 24 Hours of Le Mans with an essentially stock Series 61 Coupe, and managed to finish an incredible 10th place overall.
The 1951 Cadillac, with its signature tailfins, continued the trend towards refinement Cadillac had begun in '48 with the introduction of their new models. Using the smooth, robust and surprisingly economical OHV V-8 engine, backed by a GM Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, the Series 62 truly delivered performance worthy of a car recognized as one of world's finest in its day.
So it should come as no surprise that such an automobile would appeal to a quintessential sporting gentleman of discerning taste, David E. Davis, Jr., for example. Davis was drawn to the car thanks to its incredible condition and originality; the recorded mileage of just under 9,000 is believed original. The interior is very well preserved and in unbelievable "time-warp" condition. As far as we know the Cadillac has never been "restored", rather it has been carefully conserved so as to preserve its delightful patina.
While the chain of ownership prior to David E's acquisition several years ago is not known, one clue is present in the lower right hand corner of the windshield a New Mexico Vehicle Inspection sticker dated 9/11/1957, recording the owner at the time as a Mrs. J.P. White Sr. It can be surmised judging from the condition and mileage that Mrs. White used the car only sparingly.
This Series 62 represents an unusual opportunity to acquire a very low mileage example that has been exceptionally preserved; it will undoubtedly be a hit at any gathering of vintage car enthusiasts. Of all the legendary automobiles that David E. Davis, Jr. had the pleasure of driving in his lifetime, it was this Cadillac that he and his wife Jeannie chose to keep as their own personal classic and that fact alone speaks volumes. Offered on a Michigan Certificate of Title.
