Conceived by Baton Rouge Harley-Davidson dealer Paul Treen, Simplex motorcycles were built by the Simplex Manufacturing Corporation, of New Orleans, Louisiana. To this day Simplex holds the distinction of being the only motorcycle manufacturer of note located in the USA's Deep South. Treen had recognized the need for a small, lightweight motorcycle in the economically depressed days of the early 1930s, and after several prototypes had been tested, production commenced in 1935 at the rate of 12-15 units per week. As its name suggests, the Simplex was a basic, 'no frills' design, its 125cc two-stoke engine driving the rear wheel directly by belt. Even when the company introduced an automatic transmission model in the mid-1950s, belt drive was retained together with the outdated link-type girder front fork, and there was still no rear suspension. The Simplex's principal virtues were its relatively low purchase price and the fact that it was cheap to run, fuel consumption of up to 100 miles per gallon being claimed. By the time production ceased in 1960 the Simplex looked very much like the product of a bygone age.

Offered with a certificate of title and last licensed in 1962, this rare Simplex Automatic Sportsman retains its original paintwork and currently displays a total of only 811 miles on the odometer.
