Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Private Collection, Pakistan; acquired directly from the artist by Naushin Noon.

Upon purchasing this piece from Gulgee, the Noon family asked the artist to add gold leaf to the calligraphy ayat, "Which of God's favours do you deny" from the Surat Rehman. At this point in Gulgee's career he had turned his focus to calligraphy, and with the friendship that the artist shared with the Noon family, he was quite happy to add to the painting at their request. The frame was furthermore designed by the artist specifically for this piece.
