Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Private Collection, USA; formerly in the Private Collection of Henry Hathaway and thence by decent.

In 1935, Henry Hathaway, the late American film director, directed a very well known early Hollywood film, "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer", a character study about army officers in India during the British Raj. The film was shot on location in India, most likely somewhere in the environs of New Delhi. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture.

Hathaway subsequently visited India many times. During one of his trips to India, Hathaway purchased this artwork from Kumar Gallery. The painting hung in Henry Hathaway's home until Henry's death in 1985.
