Tibet, 17th century
Ground mineral pigments, cloth, wood and metal; the tray form lid above a front panel bearing two golden stupas set on flaming aureoles and surrounded by scrolling forms supporting multi-colored flaming jewels and a central column with a 'jewel-wheel', a large blue vajra border frames the whole. The side panels with symbols of precious jewels.
48 x 15 x 26 in. (121.9 x 38.1 x 66 cm.)

  • Theses stupa types come from the system of the 'Eight Great Stupas'. The left stupa is the 'stupa of reconciliation' and the right is the 'stupa of nirvana'.
