A storage chest
Tibet, 17th century
Ground mineral pigments, cloth, wood and metal; the narrow rectangular box is painted all over red with a simple hinged lid above an elaborate scalloped apron containing tiny repeating textile patterns. The front panel is dominated by a single writhing five-claw gilt dragon pursuing a flaming pearl surrounded by cloud trails, framed by a reciprocal cloud-band motif and dense floral form border and spandrels.
