WALT CUNNINGHAM QUOTES FROM KIPLING. Color photograph,
WALT CUNNINGHAM QUOTES FROM KIPLING.
Color photograph, 20 x 16 inches, showing the launch of the Saturn IB rocket at the start of Apollo 7, with palm trees in the foreground.

SIGNED and INSCRIBED at length by WALT CUNNINGHAM: "By force of weather, not of war / In jeopardy we steer. / The[n] welcome Fate's discourtesy / Whereby it shall appear... Kipling, 'A Song in Storm.' Walt Cunningham, Oct. 1968, Apollo 7."
The poem continues, "... How in all time of our distress, / And our deliverance too, / The game is more than the player of the game, / And the ship is more than the crew!" Kipling's poem, part of a series on seafaring, was inspired by the tumult of the First World War. A fitting tribute to the teamwork of the US space programs.
