SPACE SHUTTLE ERA CREW MISSION EMBLEMS.
Cloth crew mission emblems, 11 total, with sizes from 3½ to 5½ inches in diameter. The shuttle crew emblems were embroidered by SwissArtex beginning in 1982. Space Shuttle flights included are STS 3, 4, 5, 9, 41G, 51F, 51G, 51I, 61C, with Information Systems/JSC and Manned Space Training (JSC) emblems made by a local Houston embroiderer.
NASA awarded crew emblem manufacturing contracts, in part, to the lowest bidder, which limited the amount of thread and other materials put into any one emblem to control costs. These STS SwissArtex emblems are of exceptional quality: significantly thicker with an attention to fine details as compared to the "cruder" versions from the NASA contract manufacturer.
