Charles Mathews, an aeronautical engineer, became Gemini's manager in 1963. He was in charge during White and McDivitt's landmark Gemini 4 mission, in June 1965, which included the first spacewalk by an American. Mathews went on to hold NASA management roles during the Apollo program, and ended up at NASA's office for applications in Washington, investigating the application of materials and techniques of space technology to uses on Earth. He retired in 1976.
