SEVEN MILES OF WIRE—AND A SWIZZLE STICK.
GLENN, JOHN. Typed Manuscript Signed ("John Glenn") and Inscribed ("For Mrs Ethel Smith"), 11 pp recto only, 11 x 8½ inches, light crease at upper left corner.

SIGNED by JOHN GLENN. A long essay on the development of the Mercury spacecraft, the astronauts' experience with it ("We sometimes joked, 'You don't climb into the Mercury spacecraft, you put it on.'"), and description of the interior from the pilot's point of view. The essay culminates in an explanation of a crucial tool, a ten-inch long rod used in the event of suit pressurization to poke awkward buttons and levers: "It is really an extension of the finger. We call it, naturally, a 'swizzle stick.'"
