The certificate reads in part: "This is to certify that: LEROY G. COOPER was a member of the team which launched the first American Astronaut Lt. Col. John H. Glenn, Jr., USMC into orbit around the earth. Atlas missile 109-D, carrying the Project Mercury spacecraft into orbit, was launched from Complex 14, Cape Canaveral, at 9:47 AM, Eastern Standard Time, on 20 February 1962."
