HAWKINS, JOHN, SIR WILLIAM CECIL, and LORD CHARLES HOWARD.
Manuscript section of a document with the signatures of Hawkins, Burghley and Howard, on paper, 100 x 120 mm, n.p., n.d. [1580s]. Slightly browned, final 3 letters of Hawkins' signature cut away, several clean tears. Inset mounted into an octagonal gilded frame with inset texts and portraits of the three signatories. A small plaque at the base is labeled "Defeat Spanish Armada - 1588 John Hawkins Howard & Cecil".
A rare combination of Elizabethan signatories of note, combining as it does the Lord Admiral (Howard) the Treasurer of the Navy later Comptroller (Hawkins) and the Lord High Treasurer of England (Burghley), who came together successfully in the planning and the execution of the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. However their official business dealings in regard to the Navy were frequent throughout the 1580s, from which period this document certainly derives.
