8vo (176 x 132 mm). A4 (-A1) B4 (lacking) C-Y4. Woodcut device on title, large woodcut initial and headpiece on opening page of text, numerous smaller woodcut initials throughout. Later morocco with label stamped in gilt, raised bands. Lacking A1 (signed blank), gathering B supplied in period manuscript, a few period annotations in text, short tear to lower margin of A4, pale dampstain to margin of C3, repair to final leaf with slight loss of several characters.
FIRST EXPANDED EDITION OF ABBOT'S GEOGRAPHY, the fifth edition overall. The final 47 pages are devoted to the New World, beginning with a general overview and followed by sections on the "Northerne parts of America," "Peru and Brasil," and "the Countries neere the two Poles." It also contains an account of the discovery of America by a Welsh knight. Gathering "B" of the present copy has been supplied in period manuscript, in the same hand that has annotated the title page, adding a date of "1685." Sabin 21; STC (2nd ed) 29.
