[The Great or American Voyages.] Frankfurt: 1594-1617. Parts I-VI only (of 13) in one volume. Latin text. Folio (335 x 235 mm). 17th-century vellum over pasteboard, the flat spine with small panel outlined in gilt with rolls, titled in gilt within the panel. Various neat repairs (see below), part VI present in part only (see below), binding with neat repairs to spine and the board edges, endpapers replaced.

Comprising:
I. [Thomas Hariot's Virginia.] Admiranda narratio fida tamen, de commodis et incolarum ritibus Virginiae ... Anglico scripta sermone a Thoma Hariot. Frankfurt: Johann Wechel, "1590" [ but c.1608]. Blank F6, blank D6. Letterpress text title and imprint on two small format slips pasted onto engraved surround (as issued), letterpress title to plates, engraved arms on dedication leaf, folding engraved map of Virginia, engraved plate of Adam and Eve (the first state with inscription in the plate reading "Iodocus a Winghe in Theodore de Bry sc."), 28 fine engraved plates after John White, 1 printed over two pages, 2 folding. Lacking blank D6, plates VII, XII and XVI just shaved into image area, neat repairs to first title, some light worming to upper outer margin of first 13 leaves, the holes filled in the first five leaves.
SECOND EDITION, second issue. Hariot here describes the first English colony, with illustrations after the spectacular watercolors of John White, and the fine map of "Virginia." Church 143.

II. [Jacques Le Moyne's Florida.] Brevis narratio eorum quae in Florida Americae provi[n]cia Gallis acciderunt ... auctore Iacobo Le Moyne. Frankfurt: Johann Wechel, "1591" [but 1609]. Engraved title to the first part, letterpress title to the second, engraved arms on dedication leaf, engraved text illustration of Noah sacrificing, double-page engraved map of Florida, 42 fine engraved plates after Le Moyne, plates VI, XII and XXVI with flaps at outer margins. Lacking blank leaf H2, plates XXV and XXVI with left margins shaved with loss to the image, plates XIX and XXVI with small repaired tears to the lower outer blank margins, small tears to upper blank margin of final text leaf.
SECOND EDITION. Plates after Le Moyne's lost originals illustrate this account of the attempts of French protestants to settle Florida in the 1560s. Also included is the excellent map of the region. Church 146.

III. [Hans Stadius's Brazil.] Americae tertia pars memorabile[m] provinciae Brasiliae historiam contine[n]s, germanico primum sermone scriptum a Ioane Stadio. Frankfurt: apud Matthiam Beckerum, 1605. Final blank QQ4 (possibly supplied), engraved title, engraved arms on dedication leaf, folding engraved map of Peru and Brazil, 45 engraved illustrations, but made up from 30 images, with 11 printed twice and 2 printed three times (as issued).
SECOND EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. The history of the discovery of Brazil, with the excellent map of Peru and Brazil, centers on the accounts of Hans Staden and Jean Lery. Church 150.

IV. [Girolamo Benzoni's History of the New World.] Americae pars quarta sive, insignis & admiranda historia de reperta primum Occidentali India a Christophoro Columbo anno MCCCCXCII scripta ab Hieronymo Be[n]zono. Frankfurt: Ad invistiss. Rudolphus II ..., 1594. Blank leaves R6 and F6 (probably both supplied), 2 engraved titles, 1 full-page engraved illustration of arms with virtues, folding engraved map of West Indies, engraved text illustration of Columbus led by marine deities, engraved text illustration of world map with medallion portraits of Columbus and Vespucci, 24 engraved plates numbered in Arabic numerals within plates. Lower fifth of the folding map supplied in facsimile, neat repair to paper fault in upper outer corner of L3.
SECOND EDITION. Church 155.

V. [Benzoni's History continued.] Americae pars quinta, nobilis & admiratione plena Hieronymi Be[n]zoni ... secundae sectionis Hi[stori]a[e] Hispanorum tum in Nigrittas servos suos, tum in Indos crudelitatem, Gallorumq[ue] pirataru[m] de Hispanis toties reportata spolia. Frankfurt: Theodore de Bry, "1595" [but c. 1617]. Blank leaves i6 and F4 (the second supplied). 2 engraved titles, engraved portrait of Columbus with thirteen lines of text beneath, engraved folding map of New Spain, 22 engraved plates. Toned, numerous neat repairs, plates 3, 10 and 11 with repairs to the image area.
SECOND EDITION. This version of Benzoni's narrative is spread over part IV, V and VI of de Bry's great voyages, and records and illustrates the events surrounding Columbus's discoveries, subsequent relations with the natives, and the atrocities committed by the Spanish and the native populations. Many of the illustrations have assumed iconic status, and the three maps (one in each part) are also important as landmarks in the mapping of the Americas. Church 157.

VI. [Benzoni's History concluded.] Americae pars sexta, sive historiae ab Hieronymo Be[n]zono ... scriptae, sectio tertia. Frankfurt: Theodore de Bry, 1596. First section only (of 2). Engraved titles, double-page engraved map of Western Hemisphere with figures of Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan and Pizarro, double-page engraved view of Cusco. Without all after p. 108 (i.e. the second engraved title, and 28 engraved plates).
