[COLUMBUS, CHRISTOPHER. 1451-1506.]
Portrait of Christopher Columbus, Italian School, 17th Century, 26 x 18 1/4 in (66 x 46.3 cm).
Provenance: Marchesi don Pietro and Donna Louise Afan de Rivera Costaguti.
Fine Baroque portrait of the great explorer. This image apparently derives from the engraving first published in Rome in 1596 by Aliprando Caprioli in his Ritratti di cento capitani illustri (see following lot). Caprioli's engraving is very similar to a Columbus portrait by the Spaniard, Antonio del Rincón [ca 14461500], a court painter to Ferdinand and Isabella. There are no confirmed life-time portraits of Columbus extant, but tradition has it that Columbus sat for Rincón in 1494 after his second voyage.
