Panerai's pre-Vendôme Mare Nostrum is a reproduction of chronograph wristwatch originally designed for use by the high ranking deck officers of the Italian Navy in 1943. It was never put into production due to the tumultuous events of World War II. The 52 mm diameter black dialed prototype now takes pride of place in the Panerai Museum. 50 years after, Officine Panerai revived the reference 5218-301/A with dark blue dial into a limited production of 492 units, such as this present lot. Constructed from 316L stainless steel and involving 36 different procedures in the manufacture, the case has been rigorously checked for airtightness at a pressure of 7 atmospheres. This highly desirable reference houses caliber ETA 2801-2 movement with a Dubois-Depraz 3127 chrono module, which has been adjustment checked to 4 positions and precision guaranteed to within 10 seconds per day.
