Testimony to the evolution of Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronographs, the Reference 5970 is the successor to the celebrated Reference 3970. Essentially housing the same calibre CH 27-70 Q as its predecessor, the Reference 5970 is in a slightly larger 40 mm case. Aesthetically, its larger case, vintage style flared lugs, rectangular shaped chronograph pushers hark back to the legendary Reference 1518. Moreover, the glazed exhibition crystal back presents a bolder modern statement of Patek Philippe's signature style so that this much lauded micro-engineering mastery can be admired. Launched at the Basel Fair in April 2005, the model was produced in rose gold, such as this present lot, as well as white gold for just 2 years; hence it is considered the rarer of the metals. The yellow gold was available until 2008 and platinum recently ceased production. The Reference 5270, housing the first in-house chronograph caliber CH 29-535 PS Q, replaced the Reference 5970 in early 2011.
