Footnotes

  • 明末/清初 黑漆嵌百寶花鳥圓角櫃

    Provenance 來源:
Old Swiss family collection, and thence by descent to the current owner

It is extremely rare to find a cabinet of such imposing size, retaining original inlaid decoration in such good condition. The subject matter of birds amidst flowers is reminiscent of literati paintings of the late Ming/early Qing dynasty, and it is likely that the cabinet was commissioned for a wealthy official or merchant.

A closely related but smaller cabinet from the Mimi and Raymond Hung collection was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 27 May 2009, lot 1814.
