Footnotes

  • 清乾隆 銅胎畫廣東琺瑯西洋人物鼻煙壺 黑彩「乾隆年製」楷書款

For a closely related Guangzhou enamelled 'European subject' snuff bottle from the Qing court collection, preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, see The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Snuff Bottles, Hong Kong, 2003, p. 115, pl. 168. The shape of the bottle, structure of the panels and the style of painting on the Palace Museum example is closely related to the current bottle, and both have four-character black-enamelled kaishu marks. It is also divulged that the Palace Museum example can be dated to 1779, because it is recorded that a customs supervisor in Guangzhou, Tu Minga, presented the Qianlong emperor with a set of Guangzhou enamelled snuff bottles. It is possible that the current bottle is one of this set.
