Footnotes

  • For another Yixing stoneware model of a mythical beast, see Yixing Zisha Wares in the Palace Museum, Beijing, 2009, p.234, pl. 143. (fig.1). The Palace Museum example is dated to the Qianlong reign, and is recorded as being in the original Qing court collection. Scholar's objects made out of Yixing clay were of particular interest to the imperial families during the Yongzheng/Qianlong period. In the qinggong zaobanchu gezuo chengzuo huojidan, or the Archives of Imperial Workshops and Court Inventories of the Qing dynasty, it is recorded in the forty-eighth year of the Qianlong reign (1783) that the Qianlong Emperor ordered the Imperial workshop to make a matching wood stand for an Yixing stoneware mythical beast presented by the eunuch known as e'leli.
