Footnotes

  • The company Lechertier Barbe Ltd was based at 95 Jermyn Street from 1898 until 1970. The company started life as a musical instrument manufacturer in 1828 under Charles and Camille Barbe, at 60 Quadrant, Regent St. By 1833 it was trading in artists materials including paint brushes imported from the continent, and ceased to trade in musical instruments by 1844. From 1849 the business traded as Lechertier Barbe, and is known to have been producing artist's lay figures by 1851, as the trade catalogue for that year lists 'French lay figures'. The firm was renowned for selling materials of the highest quality, and their customers included the important artists Ford Madox Brown, Rossetti and Whistler.

Lechertier Barbe Ltd advertised in The Year's Art 1883-1914: 'Papier-maché and stuffed lay figures From 10 guineas. Inspection solicited. Photos on application' (1896-1902), describing their lay figures as 'life-sized male, female and children', with photograph.
