Footnotes

  • William Temple was born at Exeter, the second son of Bishop (later Archbishop) Frederick Temple. Educated at Rugby School and then following his father to Balliol College, he acheived a double First and became President of the Oxford Union. He was elected Fellow of Queens College and was ordained in 1909, teaching as Headmaster of Repton School between 1910-1914 before returning to the Church full-time. Appointed Bishop of Manchester in 1921, he became Archbishop of York eight years later and was elevated to Canterbury in 1942. A strong defender of the working class movement and social reform, he jointly founded the Council of Christians and Jews to combat anti-semitism and other forms of prejudice. His visit to the Normandy beachheads in 1944 made him the first Archbishop to go to battle since the middle ages. He died at Westgate on Sea in October of the same year and his ashes were interred at Canterbury.
