Footnotes

  • The furniture depicted in the present lot is thought to be consistent with that being produced in South Lincolnshire circa 1800. The primitive use of perspective and mannered poses influenced by the prevalent style of the mid 18th century embodied in such artists as Arthur Devis (1711-1787) suggests this was a regional artist unschooled in technical perspective but possessing great skill in the rendering of features and the objects that surround the sitters.
