Footnotes

  • As a leading British Equestrian of the 1950's White was a natural selection for the 1952 Olympic Team. With Douglas Stewart and Harry Llewellyn he achieved Britain's only Olympic Gold Medal for Show Jumping. He also gained renown when he took a nap between rounds of the competition, when he was the leading British scorer. A questionable Judge's decision at the Water Jump robbed him of a certain Olympic Individual Gold Medal, relegating him to fifth place. His continuing international success restored him to the Team for the 1956 Olympiad, where teamed with Pat Smythe and Peter Robeson they took the Team Bronze Medal and White 4th place in the Individual standings, again the best British score.

The 1956 Olympiad was held in Melbourne, Australia. However, quarantine regulations prevented horses from travelling to the host country. The IOC was anxious that Equestrian events should not be excluded from the Games, so selected Stockholm to host the competition.
