Footnotes

  • Provenance: A British private collection. A related dry mustard pot on a similar domed foot, lacking a cover, painted with a strutting bird is illustrated by Simon Spero in the Klepser collection catalogue (1984) p.25, colour pl.7 and pl.8. No similar example of this rare form and decoration, retaining its cover appears to have been recorded in the literature. A related design is found on a small number of early mugs, the difference being the addition of a bird in the branches above the rockwork. See Simon Spero, Lund's Bristol and the Early Worcester Porcelain (2005), p 160 for an example which shares the same sparkling palette and fine quality potting.
