A pair of Bow figures of cooks, circa 1755
Attractively enamelled in complimenting colours, modelled standing, the woman wearing a mob cap, grasping a plate of gammon with the hem of her apron, her skirt painted with puce rose sprigs, her overskirt in pale yellow with blue cuffs, the man holding a dish of cooked poultry, wearing a turban-like cap and puce breeches, his frock coat painted pale yellow with blue lining, the mound bases applied with flowers, 17.5cm high, lady with impressed T mark (some restoration) (2)

  • Provenance: Sotheby's sale 7 May 1968, lot 15. These celebrated figures are mentioned in the 1756 memorandum book of John Bowcock, clerk to the Bow factory. Sixteen pairs of the figures were ordered from him by the dealer Fogg in 1756. A pair from the Dr. Peter Bradshaw collection was sold in these rooms 24 January 2007, lot 18. Others are illustrated by Gabszewicz and Freeman, Bow Porcelain (1982), pl.213, and by Yvonne Hackenbroch's Untermeyer Catalogue (1957), pl.81, fig.244.
