  • Lethe, or Aesop in the Shades was David Garrick's first play and premiered in April 1740. Kitty Clive first came to fame in 1728 in John Gay's The Beggar's Opera. She took the role of Mrs Riot in the revised version of Lethe performed in 1749. The Bow model is derived from a mezzotint by Charles Mosley after a drawing by Thomas Worlidge, reproduced by Rosalie Wise Sharp, Ceramics, Ethics and Scandal (2002), p.125.
