Footnotes

  • Also known as the 'Dutch' or 'Tyrolean' Dancers, this group is a direct copy of the Meissen model of Harlequin and Columbine Dancing created by J.J.Kändler in 1743. This is likely to be one of the Meissen models that Sir Charles Hanbury Williams lent to Sir Everard Fawkener for Chelsaa to make copies. A fine Chelsea example of this model from the Lady Ludlow collection is in the Bowes Museum, acc no. 2004.64/Cer. A rare Bow example was sold in these rooms on 7 June 2006, lot 118. The model was also imitated by Chinese potters in the Qianlong period.
