Footnotes

  • Inspired by an uncommon Meissen snuff box form, the shape of this enamel box is the same as three recorded examples in A-Mark porcelain made in London in the mid-1740s. A London origin for this enamel box seems likely, therefore. One of the vignettes on the present lot is taken from Francois Boucher's painting of Air, executed in 1741 from a series of the Four Elements. A later 18th century copy of this painting is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, ref. 595-1882. All four of Boucher's Elements were engraved by Jean Daullé in 1748 as a series of prints dedicated to Count Brühl. A further vignette on this box can also be traced to a Boucher painting, L'Amour Oiseleur or The Cherub Fowlers, dating from circa 1730-33. The original painting, now in the Honolulu Academy of Arts, is from a series of the Seasons and these were engraved by the French draughtsman Bernard François Lépicié in 1734.
