Lot Details
Three rare saltglaze block moulds, one dated 1755
Made in 'pitcher' or fireclay and thinly glazed, one intended for the manufacture of a saltgalze sauceboat with shell moulding and diaper panels in crisp relief, the base scored into four equal divisions, 21.6cm wide, the interior with traces of ink inscription MASON, another block intended for a fluted shallow jelly mould, the finial incised 'RW 1755', 9.8cm diam (chipped and cracked), the last for a deeper fluted bowl, 9.9cm diam (shallow chips) (3)

  • A range of block moulds are illustrated by Arnold Mountford, Staffordshire Saltglazed Stoneware (1971), pls.30-47. These include a 'Turk's Cap' block incised 'RW 1768' and a double star petty block incised 'Ralph Wood 1768', made for Thomas and John Wedgwood and referred to in their account book. The present lot is dated much earlier, however, and in this instance the RW cannot refer to the same Ralph Wood.
