Lot Details
A London stoneware tavern mug, dated 1726
Probably Norfolk House, Fulham, of cylindrical shape with a grooved handle, the upper portion with a brown dip glaze, sprigged in relief with an anti-clockwise hunting scene, palm trees, hares, houses and rosettes, including the sign of a plough and harrow, incised with the name 'Samuel Burrwos (sic) 1726', the rim mounted with a later silver band, 24cm high (minor base chips, the rim concealed by the mount)

Footnotes

  • This corresponds to Type B as discussed by Wynn Hamilton-Foyn, Dated Hunting Mugs, ECC Transactions, vol. 17, part 2 (2000). The tavern sign embossed on the front shows a plough and harrow. Only a small number of taverns bearing this name are recorded in London from the 18th century. The family records of the vendor identify a Samuel Burrows living in Tettenhall near Wolverhampton in the mid 18th century and the Plough and Harrow was a popular pub name in the area.
