Two Minton Royal specimen plates, circa 1885-90 and dated 1872
One commemorating the marriage of Edward, Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra, their initial ciphers AE and A held by Cupids beneath a coronet, the turquoise border with flower panels, 24.8cm diam, mark in gold for Thomas Goode & Co, indistinct date cipher, the other based on the original Sèvres service made for Catherine II of Russia, the central medallion with her crowned cipher, richly decorated with a turquoise enamel ground and borders of raised paste gilding reserving flowers and cameo panels, 25.8cm diam, impressed MINTONS and date cipher (2)

  • Thomas Goode and Co. worked with Minton on the commission of many royal services. Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, married Princess Alexandra of Denmark on 10 March 1863. This plate possibly marks their Silver Wedding. Copies of the Sèvres service made for Catherine the Great were made at Minton for the Russian Imperial court. A Minton plate of this design was sold in these rooms on 23 April 2008, lot 328 and a wine cooler from the Minton Museum was sold in these rooms on 5 October 2004, lot 328.
