Footnotes

  • Provenance: Geoffrey Godden Collection. Wenceslas (William) Mussill was a Bohemian artist who studied in Paris, frequently exhibiting at the Salon. Along with many French artists, in the the early 1870s he moved to Stoke on Trent and joined the Minton factory as a painter. Mussill specialised in exotic plants and birds, creating many masterpieces for Minton, some using ground-breaking techniques including underglaze colouring. Mussill later worked for Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co, exhibiting pieces in the 1889 Paris exhibition.
